American Academy of Innovation (AAI)

The American Academy of Innovation is a new 33,000 sf facility located in Daybreak, South Jordan, Utah and is a free public charter school serving grades 6-12. Completed in the fall of 2016, the school’s academic program focuses on helping students prepare for success working in the global marketplace through project-based learning, development of CTE skills, and mentoring through unique and innovative partnerships with international universities.

Babcock Design worked hand in hand with the school board, the developer and Rio Tinto to design a building and site that would meet the school's needs and aspire to the design considerations of the Daybreak community. On the outside, the building is finished with masonry, metal panels, stucco and siding in a modern aesthetic. At the same time, the bold use of color provides a distinctive, recognizable image from a distance. Complementing the school is a large soccer field, benches and other outdoor gathering spaces. The inside of the building is organized around a central two-story lobby that filters students to the various classrooms and other activity spaces. The American Academy of Innovation is a unique icon in a fast-growing residential community.
